The federal government has announced $21.5 million in new funding for five Alberta carbon capture projects, marking a tangible step toward cost-effective emissions reduction. The largest award — $10 million — goes to Bow Valley Carbon Cochrane Ltd., a Calgary-region venture capturing CO₂ from a gas plant and storing it 4 km underground. Other recipients include Enbridge, Enhance Energy, and early-stage technology developers.
The move signals federal momentum behind regional CCUS infrastructure, but also underscores the ongoing uncertainty around the $16.5B Pathways Alliance megaproject — a CO₂ pipeline and storage network spanning over 400 km from Alberta’s oilsands to Cold Lake. Ottawa has offered tax incentives, but direct federal investment remains unresolved.
For Calgary’s energy ecosystem and industrial CRE, these announcements carry weight. Carbon hubs, sequestration terminals, and CCUS-linked infrastructure may shape land use, utility corridors, and industrial site demand across the province as emissions policy becomes a commercial driver.
