Alberta's Unemployment Rate Returns to the National Average

For much of the past several years, Alberta has carried an unemployment rate above the national average despite leading the country in population growth and economic expansion. That gap is beginning to close.

Statistics Canada's May labour force data show Alberta's unemployment rate declined to 6.6%, matching the national rate and improving from 7.4% one year ago. The province added approximately 14,000 jobs during the month, continuing a trend of strengthening labour market conditions.

The improvement reflects more than a single month's hiring activity. Alberta has continued to attract people, businesses and investment from across Canada, while many sectors work to meet growing demand for labour. A lower unemployment rate suggests the province is absorbing that growth more effectively than many expected.

For Calgary, labour market performance remains one of the most important indicators to watch. Stronger employment supports consumer spending, office utilization, industrial demand and long-term business confidence. While challenges remain in some sectors, Alberta's labour market is showing signs of greater balance as economic growth continues.

These trends reinforce a broader theme that has emerged over the past several years: Alberta's economy is continuing to diversify while maintaining its traditional strengths in energy, logistics, construction and professional services.
