After months of consultation, Canmore council has unanimously approved “Connect Downtown,” a long-term area redevelopment plan that will guide growth and revitalization through 2050. The plan balances heritage preservation, livability, and densification as Canmore responds to tourism growth and housing demand.
Originally slated for May, the decision was delayed to incorporate resident feedback — particularly around building height, green space, and parking policy. Council ultimately opted to retain an 11-metre height limit rather than enforce a hard cap at 2.5 storeys, following planning analysis that suggested stricter limits would produce architectural distortions and diminish design flexibility.
The plan also keeps Eklof Park designated as green space, allows for future year-round pedestrianization of Main Street, and commits to offsetting surface parking reductions elsewhere downtown. For investors and developers, this sets a clear policy foundation for infill, mixed-use, and pedestrian-friendly development in one of Alberta’s most constrained and sought-after mountain communities.
