Calgary’s Secondary Suite Program Shows Results After One Year
One year in, Calgary’s Secondary Suite Incentive Program is delivering measurable impact. Since June 2024, the City has received 5,703 applications, with 2,522 completed suites now added to the registry. The initiative offers up to $19,400 per home in financial support — encouraging safety, accessibility, and energy efficiency upgrades in Calgary’s low-density housing stock.
The growth is substantial: new suite registrations are up over 60% year-over-year, contributing to a total of nearly 20,000 registered suites since 2015. For homeowners, the program offers long-term rental income potential; for renters, it means access to safe, legal, and diverse housing options.
Despite high volumes, the City has cut processing timelines by 40%, making it easier for homeowners to develop and rent secondary units. As part of Calgary’s broader Housing Strategy, this program supports supply expansion, affordability, and resilience in the city’s evolving residential landscape.
