Hudson’s Bay is liquidating leases across Canada as part of its court-supervised restructuring—and the response has been significant. According to Urbanized, 18 entities submitted letters of interest for 65 retail locations by the April 15 deadline, including high-profile landlords and investors.

From suburban anchor sites to flagship downtown properties, millions of square feet of prime retail space are suddenly back in play. While many locations will require extensive reinvestment, the long-term potential for adaptive reuse, redevelopment, and mixed-use repositioning is substantial—especially in high-growth urban cores.

For Calgary-based developers and owners, this is a reminder of how rapidly the landscape can shift. Leaseholders with vision—and access to capital—will be well-positioned to convert legacy formats into next-generation retail and community spaces.
