Prairie Economic Gateway Seeks National Fast-Track Status

Mayor Jyoti Gondek is calling on the federal government to fast-track Calgary’s proposed Prairie Economic Gateway under the One Canadian Economy Act. The inland port project, a partnership between the City of Calgary, Rocky View County, and Shepard Development, is projected to generate $7 billion in economic activity and create up to 30,000 jobs during its construction phase.

Gondek argues the project is both "shovel-ready" and nationally significant, citing its potential to strengthen Canada’s supply chains and position Calgary as a key inland logistics hub. The site is located in Calgary’s southeast and will be serviced by CPKC rail lines.

The project has already received local approvals and is now under federal consideration for a streamlined regulatory process. Local Liberal MP Corey Hogan supports the request, calling it "worthy of consideration."

Gondek met with Prime Minister Mark Carney during the Stampede and is seeking a follow-up meeting to discuss the project’s next steps.
