Alberta: Leading the Nation in Population and Economic Resilience

While much of Canada braces for slower growth following recent federal immigration policy changes, Alberta continues to stand out.

According to the National Bank of Canada – Economics & Strategy Special Report (July 21, 2025), Alberta is forecast to lead all provinces in population growth through 2025 and 2026. This strength is driven by:

  • Continued growth in permanent immigration despite national caps;

  • A positive balance of non-permanent residents (NPRs), even as other provinces experience sharp declines;

  • And strong net interprovincial migration, including 7,200 new residents in Q1 2025 — half arriving from Ontario.

With Ontario’s unemployment rate now one full percentage point higher than Alberta’s — the largest gap in a decade — and a more affordable housing market, Alberta is attracting both people and business.

Even as Statistics Canada forecasts population declines in several provinces, Alberta is expected to maintain strong momentum. It not only avoids contraction but plays a critical role in stabilizing national population figures. By 2027, Alberta is projected to remain the top-performing province in population growth.
