Alberta has unveiled a new levy targeting large-scale, grid-connected data centres consuming 75 megawatts (MW) or more. Starting December 31, 2026, these centres will face a 2% hardware levy.
This policy results from a six-week stakeholder consultation and doesn’t aim to raise the cost of doing business—it will be fully offset against corporate income taxes.
Fair return for Albertans: The government emphasizes that the levy ensures data centres contribute their share toward infrastructure and services, without undermining the province’s attractiveness to industry.
Revenue predictability: Options like payments in lieu of taxes or levy deferral programs could provide financial stability for new projects.
Strategic timing: As global demand for AI-related data infrastructure is poised to triple to over US$820 billion by 2030, Alberta is positioning itself to benefit from this expansion while safeguarding public interest.
