$92M in Damage from July Hailstorm Adds to Alberta’s Costliest Weather Trend

Calgary’s July 13 hailstorm caused an estimated $92 million in insured damages, with vehicles accounting for 65% of all claims, according to CatIQ. This pushes Alberta’s five-year hail total to $6 billion, underlining the province’s position as ground zero for severe hail impacts in Canada.
The Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) is sounding the alarm, calling the scale of annual rebuilding “unsustainable” and demanding reforms. IBC is advocating for stronger building codes, mandatory hail-resistant materials in new construction, and renewed support for retrofitting homes—including a revival of Calgary’s Resilient Roofing Rebate Program.
In the wake of another storm, the IBC is also warning of strain on Alberta’s auto insurance system, which is already under pressure due to premium caps and rising climate-related claims. Without policy action, both insurance affordability and availability could be at risk.
Calgary continues to sit at the epicentre of what IBC calls a “troubling pattern” of extreme weather events demanding urgent national attention.
