A nearly 15% drop in Calgary’s Crime Severity Index between 2023 and 2024 is more than just a welcome statistic—it’s a signal that coordinated investment in public safety is beginning to pay dividends for everyone who lives, works, or does business in this city.
With over 100 new police and peace officers added since January 2024 and targeted resources flowing into both the downtown core and transit-oriented areas, Calgary is sending a clear message: safety is foundational to economic vitality.
For landlords and occupiers, especially in Calgary’s Downtown and TOD corridors, this is an encouraging step forward. Fewer safety incidents mean greater confidence in our urban core, confidence to sign new leases, reinvest in buildings, and attract talent and customers.
But this is not the finish line.
Continued collaboration between enforcement, prevention, social support, and community voice will be critical to keep momentum going, and to ensure our commercial districts not only feel safe, but are safe, consistently and equitably.
