Calgary City Council has delayed a final decision on the future of the downtown CTrain Free Fare Zone, with the discussion now expected to continue into 2027.

The Free Fare Zone has operated along 7 Avenue since the launch of Calgary’s original CTrain system, allowing riders to travel through the downtown core without paying a fare. Recent reviews have examined whether the program should remain in place, with discussions focused on safety, transit operations, ridership, and the role the service plays in supporting downtown activity.

The conversation extends beyond transit policy. For many downtown businesses, office workers, residents, visitors, and event attendees, the Free Fare Zone functions as part of the broader downtown mobility network, helping connect destinations across the core. Public engagement and business feedback have highlighted concerns about potential impacts on accessibility, convenience, and downtown foot traffic if changes are eventually made.

As Calgary continues investing in downtown revitalization, office conversions, cultural infrastructure, and major event destinations, the relationship between transit accessibility and urban activity remains an important discussion.

We will be watching closely as the City continues its review and evaluates how the Free Fare Zone fits into Calgary’s evolving downtown strategy.
