RBC Economics reports a sharp divergence in Canada’s housing starts performance.

  • Alberta: 2025 housing starts are running 79% above the five-year average and 28% higher year-over-year, with Calgary already surpassing its housing supply target more than a year early.

  • Nationally: Housing starts remain strong, reaching an annualized pace of 294,000 units in July—the highest since late 2022.

  • Ontario: In contrast, Ontario’s six-month average has fallen to its lowest level in a decade, with July starts down 24% from last year.

The data highlights Alberta’s role as a national outlier, with resilient construction activity amid widespread housing supply pressures.
